Constructing our future

Earlier this year, I wrote about how my parents raised my siblings and me to give back to Pittsburgh and to serve our community. This is one of the reasons service is a core value of the Massaro Construction Group.

On Wednesday, July 1, 2015 we hosted an event called “Hire One” at the Hill House Association’s Kauffman Auditorium. Late last year, based on our experience building projects in the Hill District, including Duquesne University Pharmacy, the Shop N Save grocery store, and Kaufmann Auditorium renovations, we learned that there was a need to connect Hill District residents with the upcoming construction work at the 28 acre site where the Civic Arena formerly sat.

So earlier this year, after the award of a grant from the RK Mellon Foundation, we began working with the Three Rivers Workforce Investment Board, The Hill House Association, CM Solutions, and Richard Garland to identify residents of both the Hill District and other communities in our region for a program called “Constructing Our Future”. The goal of this program is to prepare individuals for potential jobs in the construction industry.

More than 100 individuals attended an open house in late March 2015 to learn about the program and of that group we had approximately 30 individuals attend the first classes in preparation of taking the tests to gain entry to the building trade unions. These classes included life skills as well as mathematics. At the “Hire One” event on July 1, 26 individuals graduated from the program and had the opportunity to network with contractors and potential employers in the construction industry. We were also honored to have Travis Williams, COO of the Pittsburgh Penguins, David Malone, President of Gateway Financial, and Rich Stanizzo, head of the Pittsburgh Region Building Trades, speak at the “Hire One” event.

This program is one way in which we are trying to make our region a better place for everyone.

Here is a great video created by the Workforce Investment Board about the program:

A Trusted Partner

"During the school year, our entire building is being renovated in three different phases and two of those phases are occurring while students are in the building. To this point there has been little disruption to our learning environment given the scope of the work. The two on-site managers are professional, productive, and able to answer my questions as the project moves along. Massaro has my recommendation for this type of work in the future."

-Robert Scherrer, Ed. D., Principal at Pittsburgh Science and Technology Academy

"Their level of professionalism, dedication, and commitment to the safety and success of a project is resolute from the beginning to the very end. They have displayed all of the qualities of a true partner and I am grateful for the positive experience that I have had with this team of professionals."

-Leonard Corazzi, Director of Finance and Operations at Bethel Park School District
